Denver - Feb. 9, 2011 - ARCADIS (EURONEXT: ARCAD), the international design, consulting, engineering and management services company, today announced Dennis Kamber, Senior Vice President and National Market Development Manager for Water Management, has been selected as one of Engineering News-Record's (ENR) Top 25 Newsmakers of the Year. Kamber was a leader on the engineering team that researched and developed a $14.6 billion construction program for a 350-mile-long surge risk-reduction system in New Orleans and adjacent parishes to provide a higher level of storm protection to these vulnerable areas.
"The flood risk reduction work in New Orleans has been one of the most challenging projects of my career. It is a model for collaboration, with multiple contributors, constrained with extreme time limitations," said Kamber. "I feel privileged to be a part of this magnificent team of clever and dedicated people."
ARCADIS signed a $3 million planning contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers three days prior to Hurricane Katrina's 2005 attack on the city. Subsequently, ARCADIS won a $50 million contract and a $150 million framework contract for similar services. This is the third time the U.S. Army Corps has awarded a contract involving forward-looking design services for hurricane protection in the Gulf Coast. ARCADIS' water management program is now part of Malcolm Pirnie, the water division of ARCADIS.
Kamber was instrumental in seeking innovative ways to improve the city's storm-surge defenses after the disaster. He led an innovation study to search for ways to deliver a $1 billion facility to include the largest pump station for interior drainage in the world and the largest sector gate in the country. As a result, the Corps concepts and delivery options for the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway West Closure Complex were enhanced. Kamber became the initial design team project manager, internally coordinating the development of a multi-firm team. He externally coordinated with the Corps' New Orleans, St. Louis, Vicksburg and Rock Island districts to design and implement construction needed for the project.
Throughout Kamber's career he has managed, designed, engineered, and constructed major infrastructure facilities. He serves on the American Council of Engineering Companies as a Fellow, the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and is a lifetime member of both the Water Environment Federation and the American Society of Civil Engineers. Additionally, Kamber also holds memberships with the American Water Works Association, Society of American Military Engineers, the National Waterways Conference, Inc. and serves on the Virginia Tech Civil & Environmental Engineering Advisory Board. In April 2010, he was inducted to the College of Engineering Academy of Engineering Excellence at Virginia Tech for meritorious lifetime achievements and contributions to engineering. In December of 2010, Kamber was also inducted as Honorary Member of Chi Epsilon, the National Civil Engineering Honor Society with special honor.
