Lucas County Booster Pumping Station

In less than 12 weeks, ARCADIS designed a 3.6 MGD booster pumping station, a 1.0 MG elevated tank and 20 miles of trunk water main for Fulton County.

The County needed a reliable and high quality water supply to serve a new steel recycling plant operated by North Star BHP Steel Limited. Water for the plant comes from the City of Toledo Collins Park Water Treatment Plant, where it travels through City and Lucas County water mains before flowing through the new Fulton County trunk water main. The pumping station, which is actually located in Lucas County, houses two 3,500 gpm, 250 HP pumps and one 1,800 gpm, 50 HP pump.

Special care was taken at the booster pumping station and the elevated tank in providing surge protection. Thus, even if the elevated tank is taken out of service, the system will be protected against water hammer damage. The pumps are equipped with variable frequency drive systems in order to match flow with demand and to provide additional surge control. Chlorine equipment, a master meter for billing purposes and a 730 kW dieseldriven generator for standby emergency power are also housed within the pumping station. The facility was designed with parallel suction and discharge piping which provides redundancy in pumping operations. This redundancy provides a safeguard for pumping operations since it ensures that even if a malfunction occurs, not more than half the station will be out of service. The redundancy was requested by North Star BHP Steel officials who project the plant to be using an average of 3.0 MGD of water a day. The 36-inch main that leads into the pumping station will enable the facility to be expanded to 8.0 MGD, if needed. The operation of the pumping station and the elevated tank are monitored and controlled through a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system at the Toledo Collins Park Water Treatment Plant.
