ARCADIS provided engineering services for the planning and implementation of the a wastewater treatment lagoon closure program at the Campbell Soup Company pickling facility in Bonduel, Wisconsin. The project involved proper removal and disposal of wastewater and sludge from four large lagoons followed by backfilling of the remaining lagoon cavities and site restoration.
ARCADIS' services were provided in accordance with project-specific guidance received from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources during the course of the project and included preparation of a comprehensive lagoon abandonment plan; selection and coordination of subcontractors; engineering oversight during the wastewater and sludge removal, and earthwork activities; and report preparation. Numerous wastewater, sludge, and soil samples were collected and analyzed throughout the project to demonstrate regulatory compliance.
A total of 8,000,000 gallons of wastewater and 4,800,000 gallons of sludge were removed from the site during the lagoon abandonment activities. The majority of the wastewater was discharged to a nearby stream under a Wisconsin Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit. The sludge was landspread on local farm fields following conditions of the Sludge Landspreading Permit.
The project was executed in one year.
