ARCADIS designed more than 30,000 lineal feet of 15-inch through 54-inch diameter gravity sanitary sewer as part of the Northern Corridor Sanitary Sewer project. The project was especially challenging because it involved the installation of large diameter pipe sewers in a variety of different soil conditions, including bedrock, at depths more than 30 feet below grade. The Northern Corridor Sanitary Sewer provided relief for an overloaded existing sanitary sewer and provided service to new areas for residential, commercial and industrial development. The project is the largest installation in Ohio using large diameter fiberglass reinforced polyester sewer pipe. After an evaluation of various pipe materials, the pipe was selected by the City because of its corrosion resistance properties."Extensive cooperation was the key to making this difficult project a success. Throughout planning and construction, there was excellent communication between the design engineer [ARCADIS], the City of Findlay and the contractor. This was instrumental in bringing the project from its conceptual phase to final, inplace completion."
John Bores, president of Underground Utilities, Inc., the primary contractor involved in the North Corridor Sanitary Sewer project, as published in the October 1997 edition of Underground Construction, "Rock, River and Flood," page 31.
ARCADIS provided planning, design and construction monitoring services for the project, which involved close coordination with numerous regulatory agencies and utilities. For instance, the project team worked with the Army Corps of Engineers in order to obtain a permit for the construction of twin 36- inch sewers across the Blanchard River. The contract documents were written to specifically meet Corps requirements. FPS also worked with the Ohio EPA in the identification of wetlands and re-routed sections of the project to avoid wetland areas whenever possible. Wetlands disturbed by the construction were restored to their original condition. Permits were obtained from ODOT for construction beneath an interstate highway and from Conrail for construction under a set of railroad tracks for the placement of steel encasement pipe. A section of the project route also involved work within the right-of-way of a 345-kV electric transmission main. American Electric Power Company was consulted regarding design and construction guidelines on proper horizontal and verfical working distances from the transmission main to ensure safety during construction. The Northern Corridor Sanitary Sewer project was constructed in 1997 at a cost $7.6 million.
