ARCADIS designed a new infrastructure system for a 220,000 square-foot Cabela's superstore located on approximately 250 acres on the outskirts of Dundee. Roadways, parking lots, water mains, sanitary and storm sewers, and detention basins were part of the project.Design work on the site was authorized in May 1999 in order to meet a fall 2000 opening date for the store. ARCADIS coordinated the site plan with Cabela's architectural team, the Village of Dundee, the Monroe County Drain Commission, and the Michigan Department of Transportation.
ARCADIS engineers also designed improvements to the interchange at M-50 and U.S. 23 to handle the influx of visitors to the area.
On-site, the work involved approximately three miles of storm sewer ranging in size from 12 inches to 72 inches in diameter and a five-acre detention pond with an outlet to Macon Creek. The storm sewer system also drains overflow from a man-made lake on the site, which ARCADIS engineers graded for proper elevation. Transportation facilities designed for the project involved approximately 8,000 feet of three to five lane roadway surrounding the main building, with a parking lot for 1,500 vehicles. Additional roadway will be designed for peripheral development, which is expected to include food and lodging establishments, as well as a park for recreational vehicles. Water for the site is transported via approximately 10,000 feet of 12-inch water main. ARCADIS engineers also designed a 1-MG elevated tank on an adjoining site for storage. Approximately 8,000 feet of 10-inch to 12-inch sanitary sewer was also part of the project. ARCADIS survey crews were involved with the survey of the site and ARCADIS construction monitors were on-site during the construction phase. Construction costs for the entire Cabela's project exceeded $60 million.
