ARCADIS was selected to provide professional planning and engineering services for miscellaneous improvements to seven parks in the Downtown and Arlington areas of Jacksonville. These projects involved upgrade to existing facilities along with the addition of new amenities. Typical improvements included: playscapes, lighting, landscaping, signage, sidewalks, basketball courts, fencing, soccer fields, parking lots, building improvements, and security systems.
- Ft. Caroline Playground is a small neighborbood park that needed many upgrades and new amenities. Major program elements included: new playground equipment; new picnic site amenities (grills, picnic tables and trash cans); landscaping; sidewalks and walkpaths; signage; and fencing.
- Memorial Park is a 1920's vintage park honoring Florida's World War I soldiers. In the 1980's, ARCADIS designed park improvements restoring it to its original Olmstead Brothers design. Upgrades under this contract included: landscaping, sidewalk and walkpaths.
- Woodland Acres/Warrington Park was in serious need of improvements. The first priority was the design of new playground equipment and equipment upgrades. The open playfields were a nice amenity but needed to be graded and seeded, new signage and redesign of the park entrance was also needed. Other program elements included: landscaping, sidewalks and walkpaths, lighting and playscape.
Phase 2 of the miscellaneous park improvements is currently in the planning phase:
- Joe James Center is a small, concrete block community building located adjacent ot Grunthal Park in the Durkeeville area. Upgrades to the community center are to include: an HVAC system, water heater, landscaping, and signage. Due to space constraints, a playscape area will be constructed at Grunthal Park.
- Confederate Park improvements include: new walkpath and access sidewalks, new playscape to compliment the existing basketball courts incorporating handicap accessibility features, security lighting, picinic tables, benches, landscaping and signage.
- J.S. Johnson Park is a small green area adjacent to a community building. Possible improvements would include: removal of shuffleboard courts, new playscape and tot-lot design, water play feature to replace abandoned tennis courts, area lighting, landscaping, sidewalks and walkpaths.
- Sunny Acres Park and Pool is located in East Arlington and currently has a handicap accessible swimming pool. The park has been pieced together for years and is in need of site planning and analysis including an overall review of amenities. Improvements to be included: playscape and playground equipment, area lighting, landscaping, sidewalks and walkpaths and fencing.
