Located in the heart of Greensboro, Latham Park is a historic, upscale residential neighborhood and home to residences, businesses, public parks, and major thoroughfares. In September 2003, approximately 40,000 gallons of water overflowed from the sewer into the park area due to heavy rains, posing a serious health risk to residents. In cooperation with the North Carolina Division of Water Quality, the City developed a plan for proactively addressing these issues, which included replacing the existing North Buffalo Creek Sanitary Sewer Outfall and constructing the new 80-mgd North Buffalo Transfer Pumping Station and associated force main.
Together, ARCADIS and Hazen and Sawyer worked with the City to cost-effectively resolve these sewer overflow issues five months ahead of schedule. Acting as the City's Program Manager, ARCADIS coordinated multiple stakeholders, including two large consultants, Greensboro City staff, and state and federal regulatory agencies. ARCADIS also designed 3.8 miles of 54" to 60" gravity sewer; prepared the Environmental Assessment; obtained all environmental permits; and designed the optimal stormwater management practices for several tributaries feeding into North Buffalo Creek. Finally, ARCADIS provided public outreach services.
Hazen and Sawyer provided design and construction administration services for the new 80-mgd North Buffalo Transfer Pumping Station and 4.6 miles of 48" to 54" sewer force main between the North Buffalo Creek and T.Z. Osborne Water Reclamation Facilities.
"To alleviate concerns, ARCADIS worked closely with local businesses, hospitals and residents during project design and construction," said Melinda King, PE, City of Greensboro Project Manager. "During construction, ARCADIS took a complex project and made it simple."
